Joseph T. Wezwick
Illumination Award
Our biggest and brightest award of the week
A special award named after a very special camper/coach
Learn about Joseph
Each year, Weber’s Bulldog Basketball Camp presents its most meaningful and prestigious honor: the Joseph T. Wezwick Illumination Award. This award is given to a camper who truly lights up the camp—through effort, attitude, kindness, and the positive energy they bring both on and off the court. It recognizes the person whose presence makes the week brighter for teammates, coaches, and the entire camp community.
The award is named in memory of Joseph T. Wezwick, a beloved member of our Weber camp family who passed away suddenly in 2021 following a seizure. Joseph was not just a camper-turned-coach, he was a cherished member of this program’s family both on and off the court.
Joseph formally joined the Weber family when he was 11-years-old, thanks to the marriage of Coach Weber and his wife, Joe's older cousin, Kerry. Joe and Coach Weber immediately bonded over their shared love of basketball. Though he lived nearly 500 miles away in South Carolina, Weber’s Bulldog Basketball Camp quickly became Joe's favorite of all the camps he attended. Every summer, his dad made the drive to Maryland so Joe could spend a week doing what he loved most: playing basketball, staying with his cousins, and trying desperately to win it all on Championship Friday. He also loved attending any Wizards, Orioles, and Nationals games when was in town.
Like many of our most avid competitors, Joe returned to camp when he was a teenager to coach—guiding younger players, including his own cousins, with the same enthusiasm, patience, and joy he had received over the years.
The Joseph T. Wezwick Illumination Award honors Joseph’s legacy by celebrating the camper who best embodies his spirit: someone who shows up each day out of a pure love of the game, brings positive energy to everyone around them, and makes the camp better simply by being part of it
